Player Library: In Case You Are Confused
From Guide

The first thing you should do is work on your economy. It may seem boring to only build resource buildings, but after the first week you can start working on other things with enhanced resource production, allowing you to build more and remain competitive. As a result, the game gets more fun.
Recommended build order:
Metal Lvl 1
Oil Lvl 1
Food Lvl 2
Food Lvl 3
Metal Lvl 3
Oil Lvl 2
Metal Lvl 4
Food Lvl 4
Oil Lvl 3
Metal Lvl 5
Food Lvl 5
This way, you'll have a good economy and will be able to stand up to the already established bases of your foes when the time comes.
The second thing you should worry about is an alliance; the best way to protect yourself is not necessarily by building a military early in the game, but to get into a powerful alliance. It may seem daunting; you're a new player in the game and most alliances look to add to their prestige by adding older and more influential members. It's easy -- simply act like you're not a noob. Read the guide, spell sentences correctly, use the best grammar you're capable of and alliance leaders will have a much better impression of you. If worst comes to worst, join any immediately or easily relocatably nearby alliance available. With the flag of an alliance flying, rogue attacks will be deterred greatly, for the most part.
Another important point to make is to avoid talking in a manner similar to: "give meh yur alianc plz!!!!eleven!!!11"
Such grammer is nearly unanimously reviled in the game. (And in most situations outside of the game, as well.) It only serves to ruin any reputation you might have, distance yourself from others, and destroy the intent of your message. After you find a good alliance you should relocate next to them and build anywhere from ten to twenty units. Do not strain your economy with an over-abundance of units; rather, aim at mixing vehicles, tanks, and infantry. If you don't have the ability to build such units, vary between what you can. Then you will have a good economy and a good military to start off on.
You can only trade with your alliance, so broadcasting requests for resources is useless.
